With the 2024 Presidential Election fast approaching, most Americans are thinking the same thing: I don’t want a Trump vs. Biden rematch, and yet, it seems as inevitable as ever. Why is it that our two party system causes this? What should be done to remedy this?
The Democratic Party has no interest in changing their nominee, and this is perfectly reasonable. President Biden has served the party well, while preventing their more extremist members from seizing too much control (as with the Republican Party). Despite this, many voters are concerned about the President’s age and capacity to serve. With the investigation of the classified documents, the prosecution was led to the conclusion that Biden should not be prosecuted, describing him as a “well-meaning” old man with a “poor memory.” Looking on the Republican side, there is former President Trump. There are many challenges with Trump, as with Biden, but Trump tried to overthrow the government. This should disqualify him from ever holding office again. It is unpatriotic to support such a traitor to his own country.
What other options are there? On the Republican side of things, there might be. Gov. Nikki Haley is a moderate candidate, ready to move past the grievances of the Trump era. It is time that Trump’s control of the Republican Party ends, albeit this seems less likely if his stepdaughter, Lara, gains power in the RNC. Republicans, Independents, and even Democrats, should unify around Haley to ensure an insurrectionist doesn’t gain power, and to show the Democratic Party that they, similarly, need to minimize their extremist wing before they can win elections.
